A new potential scam has been brought to the attention of the Office of Fair Trading. It involves individuals being advised in an unsolicited telephone call that the contract relating to their boiler maintenance had run out.
The caller suggests that a new law has recently been introduced to say that householders are legally obliged to have their boiler serviced annually. The caller goes on to say that the maintenance contract can be renewed very quickly and easily but will require bank details to do this as soon as possible.
The Office is advising consumers on the calls during which they may be asked to provide financial details:-
• If you are concerned about the call put the phone down immediately. Failing that tell the caller that you do not wish to be contacted in this way and put the phone down. Do not become trapped in a discussion with the caller – make sure you control the conversation so you are not manipulated into agreeing to something.
• Check any existing contracts you may have. Has the insurance cover run out? If you are unsure, contact the company directly on a known number which can be found in the telephone directory or via directory enquiries.
