Star of India inspires wave of young artistic talent

by isleofman.com 1st November 2013

A painting competition organised by Ramsey Town Commissioners to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Star of India, the vessel launched from Ramsey shipyard on November 14th 1863 and still in seasonal operation, has seen brothers Juan and James Huyton emerge winners in the under-16s category.

The pair, pupils at Bunscoill Rhumsaa, were presented with their certificates and vouchers - ?50 and ?25 for first and second place respectively redeemable in Ramsey stores - by Ramsey Town Commissioners’ chairman Captain Nigel Malpass.

The occasion provided an opportunity for competition judge Heather Ruffino to praise first place winner Juan Huyton, eight, for his ‘outstanding use of colour’ and runner-up James, six, for capturing the shape and scale of the ship.

Her fellow judge and acclaimed local artist Michael Starkey said of Juan’s work: ‘Juan’s painting, with its exceptional attention to detail, accuracy and inspired use of colour, was deserving of first place while James’s work had a vibrancy and freshness about it that truly merited being awarded second prize.’
