The next film to be screened by Films in Peel is Oscar winning 2012 documentary, Searching for Sugar Man (cert 12A), on Wednesday 27th November at the Centenary Centre.
Winner of both Oscar and BAFTA 2013 Awards for Best Documentary, Searching for Sugar Man (cert 12A) charts the extraordinary and inspirational story of mysterious 1970s musician, Rodriguez.
In the late '60s, Rodriguez was discovered in a Detroit bar by two celebrated producers who were blown away by his soulful melodies and poetic lyrics. They recorded an album with him but despite overwhelming critical acclaim, the album bombed and the singer disappeared into obscurity. Amazingly, a bootleg recording found its way into South Africa and, over the next two decades, it became a phenomenon, especially amongst the anti-apartheid movement.
This documentary follows two South African fans who set out to find out what really happened to Rodriguez. This is a must-see film about hope, inspiration and the resonating power of music.
