Albany Lawn Tennis Club latest news

by isleofman.com 27th November 2013

The Mini Tennis programme, run by club coach, Ian Watson, continues to be successful and many children now age 6yrs are starting to play Mini matches, ie for points not games. In fact tennis in miniature with all the strokes forehands, backhands the occasional smash and underarm serves. It is great to watch and members who don’t have children might find it interesting to come on a Saturday afternoon and watch the one hourly sessions between 12 and 4pm. Ian is assisted by LTA qualified coaches and fun is the essence. As children progress they move to a later session, then to orange ball (under 9) and green ball (under10). There will be Mini Match play on Saturday 14th/Sunday 15th December. Most players eligible have been told about this already – any queries contact Ian (496293) or e-mail ianwatsonptr@manx.net.

There will be a break in sessions over the Christmas/New Year period but all coaching sessions will start again from Monday 6 January 2014, with the first Mini Tennis being at 12noon on Saturday 11 January. As some children have moved on to later sessions, there will be a few places available at 12 and 1pm. Anyone interested please just turn up and join in. The first three lessons are free but then if your child wants to continue you will be asked for a membership fee which covers the cost of further lessons.

The Night at the Races will be underway when the Courier “hits the street” this week and hopefully it will raise a lot of money for the expensive task of court re-surfacing.  Any members who are unable to support this event might like to organise a fund raiser themselves. The alternative could be an increase in fees which the committee don’t wish to do. Your views on that subject can be aired at next week’s AGM on Thursday 5th December starting at 7pm. Most of the committee are willing to stand for re-election so there is no need to worry about being given a “job”!,  although a Social Secretary would take the load off the committee.

Albany Closed Championships – 27 and under. Entry forms will be available next week to all yellow ball players who are 27 or under this year. This event was held back from the main event in September so that all our student members were home and able to enter. It will be held from 2nd – 5th January for just Men’s and Women’s singles. This will be open to our older juniors ie under 18s.
