Last orders for two pubs

by isleofman.com 22nd January 2014

Heron & Brearley is closing two of its public houses, one in Castletown and one in Ramsey, and is blaming changes in drinking habits for the decision.
Set to close their doors on Saturday February 1 are The Ship in Castletown and The Britannia in Ramsey.
Heron & Brearley estates director Steven Taylor said: 'Across the British Isles, people are going out to drink less often. As such, our focus is on listening to our customers and, where our pubs enjoy a loyal following, we are making investments in both cost effective refurbishments and improvements to our offer.'
He said trading for the two pubs had been tough for some time, leading to what he described as a 'difficult decision' to close them.
Mr Taylor added: 'It is always sad to see any pub closed. Compared to the UK, where pub closures are currently up 50 per cent to 26 a week, the Island has proven quite resilient. Our customers in Ramsey and Castletown continue to enjoy a great choice of venues but nevertheless when any pub closes jobs are lost and the whole community loses an important aspect or its heritage and culture.'
