Workers praised for storm damage response

by isleofman.com 6th February 2014

Douglas Corporation staff have been praised by the borough council for their efforts to make the promenade and roadways safe in the wake of tidal surges.

The sunken gardens on Douglas promenade were a victim of the severe weather conditions, with the collapse of a sea wall, railings, seats and electrical installations during Monday's tidal surge.

Council leader David Christian said: 'These past few weeks of truly dreadful weather have proved a tremendous challenge to many of our workforce. Teams have been out in all weathers working tirelessly to make the promenade and roadway safe and clear the many tonnes of sand, shingle and debris brought ashore during the high tides. They are all to be thanked for their tremendous hard work.'

Chairman of the environmental services advisory committee Councillor Ritchie McNicholl added: 'It was particularly saddening to see the sunken gardens unfortunately living up their name, submerged under several feet of water after another exceptional high tide on Monday. Our parks team work tirelessly year round to create spectacular displays and, as devastating as the damage has been, I have every confidence that they, and their many other colleagues who work outside in extreme weather conditions, will respond with their customary resolve and fortitude. The Council is indeed fortunate to have such a truly dedicated workforce.'
