Means testing the toilet tax

by isleofman.com 3rd March 2014

Tynwald has voted in favour of the controversial toilet tax but the issue is still on the political agenda.

Douglas MHK Chris Thomas, who presented a public petition containing more than 6,000 signatures to the Manx parliament, is raising the question of means testing a sewerage charge that Chief Minister Allan Bell has publicly admitted is unfair.

Mr Thomas has tabled questions for tomorrow's sitting of the House of Keys.

Chairman of the Water and Sewerage Authority John Houghton will be asked what the cost of collecting the sewerage charge will be and what 'risks' are being managed in respect of the collection, as well as what the statutory obligation is to consult before levying a charge.

Mr Thomas will also quiz the Chief Minister over the issue. He will ask Allan Bell who is responsible for working on means testing the tax, and what schedule and budget have been established for this work, as well as what proportion of the tax will be paid by social security benefits.
