Recruitment campaign for Student Constables & Special Constables

by isleofman.com 6th March 2014

This is the ninth recruitment drive by the Constabulary since January 2007 when training was first delivered wholly on the Island.  A total of 77 officers have been selected and trained during this time. These officers have replaced those who have retired or left the Constabulary.

Those looking for a fresh challenge and a new career, who are good communicators, team players and who care about the community they live in, are encouraged to consider this exciting and rewarding career.

Sergeant Adrian Shimmin, Staff Development Manager, said “We welcome those people who believe that they have the right qualities to become a police officer.  We have a rigorous selection policy that is designed to look at the skills people possess, that fit with our organisational values and behaviours and will deliver a quality service to our community”.

If people think that this is a change in career that they would be interested in, then further information is available at http://www.gov.im/Vacancies.gov?dept=30

Successful applicants will receive 30 weeks training to prepare them for work within one of the Neighbourhood Policing Teams.
During this time they will receive theoretical inputs on law, whilst also working towards a Higher Education Certificate in Policing.

This award is made available through a partnership with the IOM College and Chester University, which encourages the new officers to take a more inquisitive look at their new role and understand how it fits within the community they will police.

Those wishing further information are invited to attend one of the information sessions, where there will be the opportunity to discuss the training with members of the Staff Development Team and Police Officers who have recently been successful in joining the Isle of Man Constabulary.

There will be two sessions at our current training facility at Winchester Court, Second Avenue, Onchan on each of the following dates:

Wednesday 12th and Thursday 27th March 2014 starting at 4pm and 6pm.

The deadline for applications for Student Officers and Special Constables is 4pm on Friday 11th April, 2014.  Application packs are available to download at http://www.gov.im/Vacancies.gov?dept=30.

Applicants must be 18? years old, hold a GCSE in English Language at grade C or above, hold a full driving licence and have a connection with the Isle of Man.  They can expect to earn ?22,221 on appointment rising to ?23,229 after the first year.

Special Constables, who are volunteer officers, follow the same initial selection procedure as regular officers and are required to have the same skills as full time officers.

Inspector Cathryn Bradley, Organisational Development said “Special Constables are a vital part of the Police Organisation.  They are committed volunteers who assist us in policing our communities, bringing an understanding of the communities in which they live, providing valuable support to full time officers and help the Constabulary deliver a quality service”.

Members of the Special Constabulary will receive an initial 5 day training course which will be followed up with a number of evening and weekend sessions prior to their deployment with a mentor within the Neighbourhood policing teams.
