Chapel Choir of Sidney Sussex College to perform at King William’s College

by isleofman.com 6th March 2014

One of the finest student choirs in the world will be visiting King William’s College and performing for members of the public in the school’s Chapel of St Thomas on Friday 21 March at 6.30 pm. The Chapel Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, will sing repertoire that embraces works from Renaissance Spain to twentieth century England.

The Chapel Choir of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, has been persuaded to visit the Island by Giverny McAndry, a former music scholar at King William’s and current music student at Cambridge University. Giverny excelled in the IB diploma and was the head of Chapel Choir whilst at King William’s College. Giverny now sings alto with Sidney Sussex and aspires to a career as a conductor. Sidney Sussex College was founded in 1596 as a fervently Protestant institution. Appropriately enough, Oliver Cromwell studied there and, after Charles II exhumed Cromwell’s body for posthumous decapitation, the College received The Protector’s head, where it remains today. The Chapel Choir has more recently cultivated a worldwide reputation under Dr David Skinner, has made outstanding recordings, and is very much in demand all over the world as a touring concert ensemble.

John Wright, Director of Music at King William’s College, commented: “I am delighted  to be welcoming former student, Giverny McAndry, back to King William’s College and also to have the fabulous opportunity not only to listen to the choir in concert but also for current music students at KWC to sing alongside it in a master class earlier in that day.”
