Headteacher pays tribute to Lucia Porter

by isleofman.com 10th March 2014
The headteacher of St Ninian’s High School has paid tribute to Lucia Porter, who lost her life in an accident on Saturday.

Andy Fox said: ‘As a school we are in a state of shock and upset at the sad loss of Lucia over the weekend. Lucia was a student with a caring nature who had a close group of friends. She participated in a number of charity events, baking cakes to sell to raise funds and, only last week, came to World Book Day dressed as a character to support the event.

‘She had settled well into the Upper School in Year 10 and was taking a full set of GCSE subjects. She showed particular interest in art and food technology as she was a creative individual. However, she also enjoyed history, which was another of her option choices.

‘In school today the students and staff have had support from Cruse Bereavement Care counsellors and the Department of Education and Children on both our sites. Lucia’s younger sisters attend the Lower School.

‘There has been a special assembly to give her year group advice on how support can be given and also some basic information about the event at the weekend. Most students were aware of the event from the news reports. However, the sad news came as a shock to a number of students this morning in school.

‘In addition, the Manx flag is flying at half mast at school today. Lucia's year group will be organising an assembly in tribute to her later in the term and a book of condolence will be completed by students wishing to record their thoughts.

‘School is very subdued today as we all try to come to terms with such a tragic loss of a young life. We would hope that everyone will join us in offering our condolences and support to all of Lucia's family and friends.’

The flag at Hamilton House, head office of the Department of Education and Children, is also flying at half mast.

Tim Crookall MHK, Minister for Education and Children, said everything possible would be done to support the school. He said: ‘Everyone in education sends their deepest condolences to Lucia’s family and friends at this terrible time.’
