Islanders enjoy Rugby Masterclass with Scott Gibbs

by isleofman.com 13th March 2014

On Saturday 8th  March, 15 – 18 year olds from schools and rugby clubs across the Island took part in a Rugby Coaching Clinic with International rugby star Scott Gibbs. The event, which took place at Vagabonds Rugby Club, was hosted by Boston Charitable Foundation to raise money for Manx Miracles and Katherine Crowe.

Scott is a former international rugby player who represented Wales and the British & Irish Lions in rugby union and Wales and Great Britain in rugby league. He is renowned for winning Player of the Series on the Lions’ victorious tour to South Africa in 1997.

The training session consisted of handling drills and techniques designed by Scott for the development of budding rugby players.  Following the training, Scott was on hand to answer any questions and to autograph a picture for each of the players.

Scott Gibbs commented on the experience: “It was a delight to work with the young men at our skills session at Vagabonds RFC. The cold and the wind didn’t dampen the enthusiasm shown as we worked on some fundamental skills, emphasising depth and squareness, a skill set that was demonstrated to great effect by the victorious England Rugby Team at Twickenham on the Sunday against the Welsh.”

Greg Ellison from Boston added: “The event was a fantastic opportunity for young rugby enthusiasts to meet and be coached by an international rugby star and Boston would like to thank Scott for his contribution and Vagabonds Rugby Club for hosting the event.”
