Prisoner inquest hears from final witness

by isleofman.com 13th March 2014
Two years to the day since his death, the inquest into the fatal overdose of Jurby prisoner Michael Davidson has heard from its final witness.
Bernice Ashworth was the lead nurse at the prison on March 13 2012, and today gave her evidence as to formalities and procedures in custody.
The court also heard how further testing had been done on samples from Mr Davidson into use of pregablin.
A laboratory in England has successfully tested for the substance, previously described at the inquest as the "prisoners’ drug of choice".
They did not detect any pregablin, but the court was told that very little was known about how long it would stay in the blood or hair.
In her evidence Mrs Ashworth discussed the reception process at the prison, including the healthcare staff’s medical examinations.
The court has previously heard from an expert witness that such examinations should take place before prescriptions were given, and that they weren’t in Mr Davidson’s case – Mrs Ashworth said this was because of his highly agitated state.
When asked why Mr Davidson’s medical records weren’t updated on the system, she said ‘I have no idea’.
