Inquest results in recommendations

by isleofman.com 20th March 2014
A number of Island departments are set to receive recommendations from the courts following the inquest into the death of a Jurby prisoner.
Michael Davidson died on March 13, 2012, and the jury at the inquest yesterday returned their verdict.
They found it was accidental death, contributed to by neglect, and the medical cause of death was drug toxicity due to the combination of methadone, diazepam and dihydrocodeine.
The recommendations given included:
The need for ongoing training into the completion of medical records and passing them on.
That all staff need to know about the out-of-hours provisions for accessing Drug and Alcohol team medical records.
Considerations need to be made as to the use of urine dip tests in both police and prison custody.
That the prison medical professional is the person to give first-hand information to Ramsey GPs prior to prescriptions.

Further considerations into the amounts of methadone prescribed to prisoners, and discussions to be held about split doses becoming the norm.
The coroner of inquests will be writing to the prison governor, healthcare professionals, chief constable, the Department of Health and Department of Home Affairs regarding these recommendations.
