Police and prison authorities have responded to the verdict of an inquest into the death of 26 year old Michael Davidson two years ago.

The jury found there was 'gross failure' to pass on medical notes and this contributed to Mr Davidson's death. The verdict was accidental death, with neglect a contributing factor. The inquest heard how he was prescribed a large amount of medication in both police and prison custody.

The cause of death was given as drug toxicity due to the combination of methadone, dihydrocodeine and diazepam.

In a statement, the Department of Home Affairs says a comprehensive review had already taken place since Mr Davidson's death and measures had been introduced to improve procedures and communication between agencies. The coroner of inquests made 15 recommendations that the department says it take 'appropriate steps' to address.

Meanwhile, the Manx Constabulary said it took its responsibility and duty of care to detainees seriously, adding: 'Processes are constantly reviewed and enhanced with a background of applied professional practice to achieve this. As the Coroner has said in his findings the process has improved and is different now and the Constabulary will follow his recommendation.'
