Douglas Corporation says it is being forced to introduce new charges at the eastern district civic amenity site after the government withdrew its subsidy.
From April 1 it will cost ?8 to dispose of a television set and ?6.50 for a computer monitor.
Councillor Bill Malarkey said: 'Central government’s moves to devolve more services to local government, balance its budgets and achieve savings have a direct impact on local authorities’ finances, which are already under pressure.
'It was against this sombre background that the committee resolved, reluctantly, to introduce the charges after the government announced its decision to withdraw the subsidy it was providing for the service. We are, of course, not alone in this. All other civic amenity site operators in the Island are faced with the same challenge, so are also having to bring in their own charging levels.'
The Corporation has warned that no cash payments can be taken. People should pay by debit card or can pay in advance at the
town hall.
