Positive Action Group Meeting - 3 MHKs discuss Parliamentary Reform

by isleofman.com 28th March 2014

Since its formation the Positive Action Group (PAG) has been campaigning for various aspects of parliamentary reform, so it is delighted that serving, progressive, politicians have agreed to discuss it at the next public meeting on Monday

Various ideas about Parliamentary Reform continue to simmer in the Isle of Man, so this month PAG has invited 3 proponents to discuss their ideas.

Phil Gawne surprised everyone earlier this year and caused quite a stir in advocating that the Legislative Council be abolished.

Peter Karran is not so extreme in that he proposes the popular election of LegCo on an all-Island basis on or after 2018. He will present his Legislative Council Reform Bill for its second reading in the coming weeks

Chris Thomas favours holding a public Referendum on Parliamentary Reform in 2016 and also cutting the number of full-time politicians from 33 to 24.

Each MHK has a different opinion on the type and method of change, but each is passionate that change is needed to reflect a true modern democracy.

The 3 MHKs will each  have chance to develop their ideas with active participation from an inquisitive PAG audience.

It should be a lively debate, starting at 7.45 pm and  it follows PAG's Annual General Meeting which begins at 7.00 pm. The event is free and all are welcome.
