Visitors to Glen Wyllin beach can now do their bit to help keep it free of litter.

An innovative litter bin has been placed there, the first of what is planned to be dozens of bins sited at Isle of Man beauty spots. Members of the public can take a plastic bag from a dispenser and join in collecting rubbish, alongside the regular beach cleans held by Beach Buddies.

Bill Dale, who founded Beach Buddies, said: 'Based on our research, it appears that this is a brand new idea but I would be surprised that there isn't something similar somewhere. Whatever, it's certainly a brand new idea for the Isle of Man, and the initial feedback has been very encouraging, with a number of companies and organisations already expressing an interest in sponsorship.

'I think this has real potential, and will allow everyone who walks our beaches and beauty spots the chance to make a contribution towards keeping our Island beautiful. It makes it easy for people to get involved in a small way, but also a very positive way.'

The Society for the Preservation of the Manx Countryside and Environment has sponsored the first bin. Secretary Tony Glen is pictured with Michael Commissioners chairman Peter Hayes.

Tony said: 'Beach Buddies has a brilliant team of volunteers who have done a truly amazing job this last few years. Goodness knows what sort of a mess our beaches would be in if the volunteers had not been giving up their time and energy every weekend.'
