Fans of vintage style are in for a treat at the iMuseum on Thursday 10th April as Hair and Beauty students from the Isle of Man College take on a new live styling challenge, recreating practical First World War women’s hairstyles.
As part of their course training, students have been using photographs from Manx National Heritage’s archives to create the complex Edwardian hairstyles from the early 1900’s and in contrast, the more utilitarian hairstyles which became popular for working women during the war years. Their skills will be put into practice during the live challenge. Visitors are invited to come along and watch the students style their models and chat to them about how they achieve the look.
This will be the third year the students will be recreating vintage hairstyles at the iMuseum. Katie King, Community Engagement Officer for Manx National Heritage said;
“We look forward to working with the hair and beauty students each year, they help us to bring our collections to life. We agreed it would be a wonderful tribute to all the brave Manx women who helped keep the Island going in the First World War to stage an event celebrating their achievements in the anniversary year. The students will be modelling their hairstyles and period clothing in our First World War exhibition at the Manx Museum at 12:30pm, as a tribute to the ladies we have been researching.”
Lindsey Jackson, Hair and Beauty Assistant Programme Manager for the Isle of Man College commented;
“With it being the centenary year of the First World War, our hair and beauty students have been learning about the role of women within this period and have been fascinated with how life changed for women from this time. They have all researched the period and have been recreating hairstyles using modern equipment. We are looking forward to the event and hope lots of people will come and join us.”
Visitors are invited to the iMuseum from 10am – 12noon on Thursday 10th April to watch the live styling event. The First World War fashion show will begin at 12:30pm. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
