Legal advice over Sefton bailout

Did the government overstep the mark when it came to the Sefton bailout? Tynwald will soon find out with independent legal advice.

Yesterday, the court voted unanimously to support a motion from South Douglas MHK Kate Beecroft asking for an independent view on the loans and land deal worth more than ?4.5 million.

Her motion was supported by Treasury Minister Eddie Teare who suggested the expected ?5,000 cost should be met by parliament rather than the government – a move that was rejected by the court.

After winning the vote, Mrs Beecroft said whichever budget it came out of, the money still belonged to the taxpayer:
