The medals which Team Isle of Man will be aiming to win at this year’s Commonwealth Games have been unveiled for the first time. The gold, silver and bronze prizes are the focus of training and commitment for 4,500 athletes across the Commonwealth, and to mark 100 days to go to the opening ceremony on July 23 the Glasgow 2014 medals were revealed to the public in the host city.
Juliet Holt, President of the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association, said:
“Seeing the medal designs for the first time is always an exciting moment in the build-up to every Commonwealth Games. The medals look superb and we hope to see Team Isle of Man competitors bringing a few of them back to the Island this summer!”
The unique medals are silver gilt (for the gold) silver and bronze – the traditional make-up of medals at Commonwealth and Olympic events – and weigh in at 100g each. They have been designed by internationally renowned jeweller Jonathan Boyd who worked with a team of eleven specialist jeweller-makers at the prestigious Glasgow School of Art (GSA) to hand make the medals through a series of complex and skilled processes meaning each one is truly unique. They were revealed at a special event held at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on April 14 during which there was a recreation of the medal procession ceremony showing the ceremonial outfits to be worn by the male and female medal bearers, the trays the medals will be placed in, and specially created gifts which will be given to the winning athletes.
Team Isle of Man won two bronze medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi – cyclist Mark Christian in the points race on the track, and shooter Tim Kneale in the double trap event. Team Isle of Man’s Glasgow 2014 squad will be announced by the Isle of Man Commonwealth Games Association on May 8. The Association is the organisation responsible for the publicity, fundraising, travel, and support for Team Isle of Man’s participation at the Commonwealth Games. It is a registered charity (No.644) and relies upon fundraising events and donations to fund the team.
