by isleofman.com 26th April 2014
Old Boys hit six past St John’s without reply at Blackberry Lane to show their credentials in the first round of the Ascot Hotel Junior Cup.
An 11th minute penalty from Robbie Ward set them on their way and they went onto record a comprehensive victory, courtesy of further goals from Sean Gavin, Chris Clinton, Matthew Quilliam, Nick Bass and Dean France.
They will now host St Mary’s in the tie of the quarter-finals after they saw off Union Mills 5-3 at the Bowl.
Nathan Halsall (two), Nathan Cooil, Danny Doyle and JJ Balanda were on target for the Saints.
Ian Drake hit a treble for the Millers but still ended up on the losing side.
A goal in each half from Callum Peat ensured Combination Two high-flyers Gymns saw off Combination One strugglers Ramsey Youth Centre at Tromode.
They will now travel to favourites Peel who were 7-2 winners over Colby.
Colby took a surprise lead and led twice, holding the westerners to 2-2 at the break.
However, despite being reduced to 10 men, Peel took control in the second period with Kenny Walker, Dan Corkill (two), Aaron Costain and Dan Hawke (two) among their scorers.
Danny Mackay, Graham Druggan (two) and Mark Hargreaves were the marksmen as Douglas Athletic overcame their neighbours Pulrose United 4-1 after extra-time to seal a quarter-final tie with the holders Corinthians who themselves were 4-2 winners at battling Malew.
Robert Bentley was the star of the show with a hat-trick, while player-manager Matthew Palmer netted the other.
Tim Callister scored twice for the southerners.
Rushen were given a scare before edging out Ayre 3-2 at Croit Lowey.
A late winner from Andrew Moody put them through.
Danny Kelly had given Ayre a half-time advantage only for Matty Lamb to equalise.
Rushen went in front through Ross Mulligan before Max Crowe levelled again for the Tangerines.
Despite playing the closing stages with 10 men, Moody ensured Rushen had the final word.
They will now travel to Marown who were 3-1 winners at Onchan, courtesy of goals from Neil Withers (penalty) Patrick Capelen and Oliver Chambers.
