At the Extraordinary General Meeting of the club on Monday, it was unanimously agreed that the club should go ahead with the proposed re-surfacing of the three outdoor courts. The chosen surface, Poraflex, is a porous cushioned acrylic which will give improved playing time after rain and the surface will be kinder to joints. The cost ?80,00 is the best price from four quotes, with another company declining to do work in the Isle of Man. The proposed start date is Monday 11 August and work is expected to take 3 –4 weeks depending on weather conditions. The indoor court will still be available for members as usual. The finance has been worked out carefully but will entail fundraising plus taking a loan. The Committee are looking for members to come forward with ideas, be it events, selling items, competitions, donations or banner/court sponsorship.. Please contact a committee member or e-mail albanytennispr@manx.net if you can help.
On Tuesday the club’s Wimbledon ballot took place and 18 lucky members were allocated tickets for this year’s Wimbledon Championships. All have been informed of the date and have until 6pm on Saturday 3 May to confirm they are accepting the tickets drawn in their name. Any tickets not accepted will be offered to the next member on the reserve list. Tickets can not be sold.
Thank you to those members who turned up for the pre-season Spring Clean last Saturday. The courts and surround look better. The IOMLTA Veteran Championships starts this weekend – running from Friday 2 – Saturday 10 May. Entries for the men’s events are reasonable but the women have not supported the event. This is the County Closed Championships and used to have good numbers, however most players don’t like competition it seems.
Last Sunday morning, members who had played in the winter leagues turned up for a game plus bacon & sausage baps, organised by Jackie Russell. A nice idea that will probably be repeated later in the season.
