Local potter announces studio open weekend

by isleofman.com 1st May 2014

Potter Kathryn Mitchell is one of eight local artists opening her studio to the public as part of the third annual Western Open Studio Art Trail (WOSAT). 40 artists are participating over 18 venues in Peel and the west of the island.

Kathryn officially opened her Kirk Michael workspace in November 2013, having received support from the Small Business Start Up Scheme and the Arts Council. A new collection of work was launched before Christmas, which sold successfully direct from the studio and through Manx National Heritage. Her work is now available to buy at the Manx Museum Shop and The House of Manannan.

The wheel-thrown and hand-painted tableware is inspired by Kathryn’s childhood on the island, especially Silverdale Glen. She says of the designs: “Silverdale was a beautiful place in which to grow up and I have the fondest memories of daffodils, bluebells, chestnut trees, rowing boats and lots of rain showers! These strong influences undoubtedly show through in my designs.”

The WOSAT weekend offers a rare chance to see inside what is normally a very private space and an opportunity to find out how artists develop their work.

Kathryn’s studio, situated at Lower Bishopscourt Farm in Kirk Michael, will be open throughout the May Bank Holiday weekend from Saturday 3rd to Monday 5th, 10am til 5pm.

Entry to all 18 WOSAT venues over the whole three days costs just ?2, while children under 16 go free.  The trail guides cost an additional ?2 and offers not only an excellent introduction to the participating artists but is a must to find your way around the mix of studios, exhibitions and other venues as well as being a wonderful souvenir of the whole colourful event.
