End in sight for Manx pension supplement?

by isleofman.com 6th May 2014
Treasury minister Eddie Teare says plans to overhaul UK state pensions in two years time could trigger a re-think on the Manx pension supplement.

Mr Teare has warned that the Island's National Insurance fund which pays for social security benefits, retirement pensions and the Manx supplement, is in rapid decline.

It will come under severe pressure over the next 30 years, with the number of over-65s due to almost double from 15,000 to 29,000.

Those who have paid NI contributions in the Island for 10 years are entitled to claim a pension supplement, which adds just under 50% on top of the basic state pension.

But UK government plans to increase state pensions in 2016 could see the difference wiped out.

Mr Teare says if that happens the supplement might no longer be justified: Clip 1
