New police recruit joins the virtual beat

by isleofman.com 12th May 2014
The Isle of Man Constabulary’s latest recruit will be on the beat 24 hours a day – the virtual beat!
Tweet Beat, which has started today (Monday), has been described as ‘the most exciting social media development in policing.'
It will give users of smart phones, computers, tablets and laptops immediate ‘interactive’ access to the Manx force.
It aims to provide help and advice for Island residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week, maintaining community safety and keeping people up-to-date with important information, alerts and warnings, including audio clips.
@tweetbeatIOM will be patrolled by a serving police officer, as part of their daily policing duties, and goes beyond a simple Twitter message or Facebook update.
Chief Constable Gary Roberts says it will address a wide range of subjects, from domestic violence to stalking and harassment but will not diminish face-to-face communication.
