The Children’s Centre’s Race The Sun event takes place this Saturday [May 17] with a record entry of 29 teams. Last year the event raised more than ?10,000 and organisers are hoping the increased entries can lead to another massive fundraising total this year. Race The Sun, which is sponsored by Mann Made Group, is one of the Island’s toughest and most popular team challenges. It is a relay race which raises money for the charity with teams running a lap of the Island’s Raad ny Foillan 98 mile coastal footpath between sunrise and sunset. Race the Sun is now in its seventh year and in that time has raised over ?40,000 for The Children’s Centre. All funds raised go directly to supporting vulnerable children and young people on the Island through the charity’s Mobex project.
In previous years the event has covered a clockwise route of the Raad ny Foillan, but this year it will be an anticlockwise lap starting and finishing on Peel Promenade. Teams start at 5.08am with the aim of completing the relay before the sun sets at 9.22pm.
Although the majority of the race is on the coastal footpath there are sections where competitors will be on, or crossing, the road. For this reason car drivers are being asked to take extra care at the times stated below, in the following areas:
• 5.30am – 7am: A27 Coast Road between Glen Maye and the turn off to Niarbyl Cafe.
• 9.30am – 1pm: A25 Old Castletown Road between Crogga and its junction with the B23 Port Soderick Road.
• 10.45am – 2.30 pm: A2 Douglas to Laxey Main Road from Baldrine to its junction with the B49 Laxey Hill.
• 11am – 3pm: B11 Ballaragh Road.
