Tram horse death

by isleofman.com 14th May 2014

Douglas Corporation has confirmed that a horse died while pulling a tram along the promenade late yesterday afternoon.

A post mortem on the horse, named Albert, is being carried out today. It's understood the animal, which was 17 years old and had been in good health, suffered a stroke near to the stables at Strathallan.

The death occurred just a day after this year's horse tram service was officially launched by the Mayor of Douglas.

Tramways supervisor Michael Crellin, who has worked on the trams for 41 years, said this was the only horse he was aware of that had died while pulling a tram.

A spokesman for the Corporation said: 'All horses are checked regularly. A vet attends and looks at them and knows them well.'

The service is operating as normal today.
