The road at Hillberry Corner will be closed to traffic today so it can be resurfaced ahead of the TT races.

The last-minute works are being carried out at the request of the race organisers. Work had only just been completed as part of a general highway improvement programme.

A government spokesman said the work was to a good standard, met all highways standards and enhanced the safety of the road from a general motoring perspective. But TT officials raised concerns about a 3 to 4 millimetre dip on the apex of the bend that could catch a rider out at speeds of 160mph.

Head of motorsport at the Department of Economic Development, Trevor Hussey added: 'After lengthy consideration and discussion with representatives from the ACU, Department of Infrastructure and the Motorsport Group the decision was reluctantly taken to resurface this particular section of the highway. Because of the nature of the corner it was decided to re-lay right around the bend in order to minimise the potential risks to riders on the approach and exit, while maintaining the integrity of the road. Patching a short section was considered, but this would not guarantee an improvement at racing speeds. Obviously the safety of TT competitors and other road users is of paramount importance.'

The road is closed today from 9.30am to 4.30pm and may need to be closed again from 6.30pm until 10pm.
