Serial sex offender jailed

by isleofman.com 2nd June 2014
A man who grew up on the Isle of Man is starting a year-long prison sentence after groping a prison officer.
Matthew Hampton, who now lives in Cambridge, was also convicted of groping a cleaner at a homeless shelter.
The 31-year-old denied both offences but was found guilty by a jury at Exeter Crown Court.
Judge Francis Gilbert QC heard he had committed a string of similar offences, including groping a woman in a pet shop and peeking at a woman in a changing room, both committed on the Island.
Hampton was given six months in jail for those offences, and it was while he was serving the term in Exeter he sexually assaulted the prison officer.
Just weeks after he was released, he groped the cleaner at the homeless shelter he was living at when his employer went bust.
During his trial, Hampton had claimed that both incidents had been accidents.
Sentencing him, Judge Gilbert said his offences were capable of causing great distress and took his previous convictions into account when sending him to jail.Clip 1
