New dining room for QEII proposed

by isleofman.com 5th June 2014
The Department of Education says it’ll ask Tynwald for just over three-quarters of a million pounds this month to upgrade dining facilities at a school in the west.
Queen Elizabeth II High School will get a new kitchen and servery as well as a bigger dining hall, if the court approves spending the money.
The department says the current facilities were designed to cater for up to 500 students, but there are currently 880.
Work in 2008 eased some of the pressure but more improvements are now needed to cope with a rise in student numbers.
The department says the new dining room could accommodate 222 students, where the existing one holds just 128.
It says the kitchen facilities at the school have had little modernisation work over the past 35 years and this scheme would allow students access to healthy, fresh and locally sourced food.
The project, which has already cost almost ?78,000, would also see the staff changing areas, a plant room, and caretakers’ office moved.
If Tynwald gives the go-ahead to Education Minister Tim Crookall next week, work would start immediately and finish in time for the new school year next year.
