Nation's station founder recalls test transmissions

by isleofman.com 6th June 2014
Manx Radio's 50th anniversary year reaches a milestone this week.
It is exactly half a century since the station's first test transmissions crackled onto air.
For two hours in the morning and afternoon a handful of pioneer staff tested Manx Radio's transmitter from a 30-foot caravan on Hilberry Road in Onchan.
The station launched later in June 1964, making history as the first commercial radio station in the British Isles.
Manx Radio's founder and general manager John Grierson operated those fledgling transmissions.
He says engineers positioned the caravan precariously on a hillside, adding to the problem of operating from such a rudimentary studio: Clip 1
