Laxey blossoms thanks to generous garden centre donation

by isleofman.com 17th June 2014
Riley’s Garden Centre generously donated a great number of flower bulbs to Laxey Primary School. Staff and pupils creatively used their gardening skills across their community to bring a blaze of spring colour for next year to the school grounds and local churches.

The school gardening club has put the bulbs to creative use in the school grounds and in the community.  Jean Aksoy, Headteacher of Laxey School said: “Thank you very much to Riley’s Garden Centre for this generous donation. The school gardening club, together with some families in the Easter holidays, have worked in the school grounds, around fences, under trees and along walls planting the different varieties of bulbs, from daffodils and narcissus, to tulips and bluebells.”

She continued: “Lynne Beattie, who runs the gardening club, took some of our Year 6 children to All Saints’ Church, Lonan, where they spent the afternoon working with the Mums and Tots Group and Reverend Jo Dudley, planting daffodils in the grounds. This group of pupils also suggested that the tulips and smaller bulbs like anemone and crocus should be planted on the memorial site of a three year old child, Alan McCulloch, who was killed by a plane crashing into his home on Pinfold Hill in 1944.  The pupils displayed such respect for their surroundings, and worked together so well, they couldn’t have made us more proud.”

Thomas Riley said: “We were extremely pleased to donate nearly ?500 worth of bulbs to Laxey School for their community projects around the village. These projects will benefit the whole village next spring as well as creating opportunities for education, recreation and exercise. It is fantastic for our company to be able to support local communities across the island in this way.”

Laxey School will be donating some of the bulbs to Christ Church Laxey and Laxey Methodist Church.
