Minister still needs to go says Michael MHK

by isleofman.com 18th June 2014
The Economic Development Minister needs to go to protect the integrity of the Council of Ministers.
That's according to Michael MHK Alf Cannan who successfully called for an emergency debate on the issue of the Sefton loans yesterday. (Tues)
Independent legal advice has concluded that, ‘more likely than not’, both the original ?450,000 loan made in 2012 and the ?1.3m cash loan given the following year were ‘ultra vires’ - ie not lawful.
Mr Cannan's motion was that Tynwald views with concern the independent legal opinion received in respect of the Sefton loans and the response by the Council of Ministers.
That response was the Chief Minister's rejection of Economic Development Minister's resignation.
Mr Cannan says he must go.
John Shimmin says he will talk to the Chief Minister tomorrow about his position, and consider his options accordingly if Allan Bell is adamant about him staying in post.
He says it's been a difficult time for him and his family, but believes the situation reflects the nature of democracy.
