Douglas Mayor, Councillor Stan Cain held a reception for Midlands-based Green Flag judges Louise Worton and Sam Mills ahead of the pair judging Douglas Borough Council’s latest bids in the Green Flag award scheme.
In 2013 the Council won, at its first attempt, two Green Flags, one for the marine (sunken) gardens on Douglas Promenade, the other for Noble’s Park.
This year the Council-owned and operated Douglas golf course and a scheme on Douglas Head featuring a large-scale floral representation of a poppy to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War have been selected by the parks section to be considered for Green Flag status.
The Green Flag award scheme, which takes into account environmental, management and future planning policies along with community involvement, is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces across the British Isles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand, awarded by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.
The judges’ decision will be announced later this year.
