An investigation has been launched following a fire at a mental health unit in the grounds of Noble's Hospital last night.

Health authorities have confirmed that fire broke out at Grianagh Court at 9.40pm, resulting in the evacuation of part of the building.

A spokesman for the Department of Health and Social Care said: 'Evacuation procedures were successfully implemented and as a result no injuries were sustained by patients or staff. The department would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the calm and professional manner in which the incident was managed by both nursing staff and emergency services.'

The department said it could not speculate on the cause of the fire which was subject to ongoing inquiries. Patients have been returned to the unit which remains operational.
