by isleofman.com 24th June 2014

Matthew Richardson, author of This Terrible Ordeal - Manx Letters, Diaries and Memories of the Great War- is to give a talk on Wednesday July 2nd at 11am at the Henry Bloom Noble Library.

In his talk Mr Richardson, who is Manx National Heritage’s curator of social history, will give an account of the experiences of the Island’s people during the First World War.

His book charts how the Island endured the conflict which dragged it politically, socially and constitutionally into the 20th century.

He illuminates untold personal stories of war with letters home from Manx soldiers and sailors, and with the poetry and art produced in reaction to the conflict. He examines the changing role of women, the experiences of those interned in the island, attitudes to conscientious objectors and concludes by analysing the lasting impact of war in the years which followed.

Tickets are free and can be collected from the ground floor counter of the Henry Bloom Noble Library in Victoria Street, Douglas.
