Minister fails to rush bill through Keys

by isleofman.com 25th June 2014
A bill which would see the reorganisation of the Island's Attorney General chambers has been halted for the time being.
The Law Officers Bill is being taken through the House of Keys by Home Affairs Minister Juan Watterson.
The bill, which was introduced in the Legislative Council, follows a report from the Queen's former Chief Inspector of the Crown Prosecution Service, Stephen Wooler.
He recommended that, as is the case in all other jurisdictions in the British Islands, there should be a second Crown Law Officer over here who could support the whole range of the duties of the Attorney General.
That person would be known as the Solicitor General, and Mr Watterson had hoped the bill would pass all its stages in Keys this week to allow the appointment process to start in the summer.
But members didn't support the suspension of standing orders, and there was a call for it to be reviewed by a committee.
That call failed, and Mr Watterson believes it's because the bill is a fairly simple one. Clip 1
