Queenie fishery to open for limited period

by isleofman.com 30th June 2014
Limited fishing for queenies is to be allowed for two weeks from Wednesday (July 2)
The interim measure follows advice from Bangor University earlier this year which recommended queen scallop fishing should be suspended this summer because of a significant depletion in stock.
It has fallen to 53% below historic levels and 88% below a peak population seen in 2011/12
DEFA Minister Phil Gawne and officers from the Island's fisheries division have been working with the industry since the report came out in May, and "test trawls" have been carried out in the Irish sea which so far have broadly confirmed the reported low stock levels.
Mr Gawne says he appreciates it's a very difficult time for fishermen and his department is trying to perform a delicate balancing act between protecting the industry and ensuring the stocks remain sustainable:Clip 1
