Snaefell railway needs ?700,000 of repairs

by isleofman.com 4th July 2014

Politicians could spend ?720,000 finishing off work on the Snaefell Mountain Railway during this month’s Tynwald sitting.

Infrastructure Minister Phil Gawne will ask the court to approve spending the money on the third phase of work replacing track.

Some sections are in need of urgent replacement because they’re in critically poor condition.

During the project, rails, ballast, sleepers and fixings will be removed and replaced.

The work has been going on since 2010, when Tynwald spent ?1.5 million on the worst parts of the track which runs from Laxey to the summit of Snaefell.

Since then, work has continued to replace the sections of track which have needed replacing urgently.

The third and final phase will, subject to Tynwald approval, replace all of the running line pointwork on the railway and the last section of track.

?55,000 has already been approved and the department will spend ?700,000 on the work along with ?75,000 on design fees.
