Viking and Global villages add colour and contrast to Tynwald Day

by isleofman.com 7th July 2014
St John's plays host to contrasting events away from the ceremony to entertain visitors this Tynwald Day.
A Viking village has been set up at Cooil y Ree offering the public a chance to learn about the Viking way of life, handle replica weapons and see the type of clothes our predecessors wore.
Around 50 Vikings from groups in the Island and further afield have set up the encampment and tonight at 10.30pm they'll re enact an early "Thing assembly" or Tynwald Day.
Viking and organiser John Shakespeare says it'll be an engaging glimpse of times gone by for all ages.
The camp is open to the public free of charge until 5pm.
Elsewhere, the One World Centre will add an international flavour to today's celebrations at their Global Village, this year based in St John's Arboretum, just off the Fairfield.
The event will include performances of African song and dance, Indian and Filipino dancing, a digerdoo and karate.
You can have your name inscribed in Chinese characters, your hair braided, a henna tattoo or make a smoothie by pedaling a push bike!

Visitors can find out about the work of local charities overseas, browse stalls selling fair-trade goods and sample food from around the world.
