Sixth Formers at King William’s College were celebrating today as their International Baccalaureate exam results were published.
The average points score of 33.4 makes it amongst the strongest set of results since the College introduced the IB back in 2002.
This points score is equivalent to more than three A*s at A level according to the UCAS tariff.
78% of all grades were at Level 5 or above, the equivalent to A*-B at A level.
Six candidates achieved 40 points or more which puts them in the top 6% of IB students worldwide.
Lauren Blayney scored a spectacular 44 points, only one point off the maximum of 45. This put Lauren into the top 1% of students worldwide.
On the basis of these results the vast majority of students have met their university offers. This cohort of College students have won places at universities all over the world including LSE, St Andrews, UCL, Edinburgh and at institutions in the US, China the Netherlands and Germany.
Joss Buchanan, the Vice Principal – Academic at the College, commented:
The great strength of the IB is its breadth – the requirement to study six subjects – and the students have done spectacularly well across the board from the languages to the sciences and from Maths to the arts. It is a fantastic education and it is no surprise that more than ever before universities are going out of their way to recruit IB students. We are delighted that this year group has done so well and we are confident that the IB has given them the skills and knowledge to excel at university.

There was a broad range of academic ability in this lively cohort of KWC students. It’s great that the top end have done so well but we also recognise what the IB programme has done for the less academic. The IB is, in my view, an outstanding pre-university education for a broad range of abilities. This year’s results are a wonderful academic achievement but education extends beyond the classroom and I am also very proud of what these students have achieved in Music, Drama, Art and Sport during their time at the College.
