President of Tynwald honours Norfolk Island Anniversary Day

by isleofman.com 8th July 2014

Ahead of Anniversary Day in Norfolk Island on June 9th the President of Tynwald Clare Christian extended greetings by letter to the Hon David E Buffett, Speaker of the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly.

In her letter Mrs Christian recalled the warmth of welcome she received while in the territory in 2013 to share in the celebrations, an experience which, she wrote, ‘has added strength to the cultural link which exists between our islands. ‘

In recognition of the occasion, on June 9th the Isle of Man flag was raised in Norfolk Island and the Norfolk Island flag outside the Legislative Buildings.

Thanking Mrs Christian for her letter Hon Speaker Buffett wrote: ‘I read your letter to those assembled in the large compound yesterday, as we stood to sing grace and then enjoy a large picnic lunch together…Thank you for honouring Anniversary Day and flying the Norfolk Island flag at your Chambers yesterday. I send you, members of Tynwald, and the people of the Isle of Man warm greetings from all here in Norfolk Island.’

Norfolk Island, a self-governing territory of Australia, celebrates Anniversary Day (also known as Bounty Day) traditionally on June 8th in memory of the arrival in 1856 of the Pitcairn Islanders, descendants of the Bounty mutineers led by Fletcher Christian.
