Children with disabilities and special needs take part in athletics festivals

by isleofman.com 11th July 2014
Children with special educational needs and disabilities took part in athletics festivals run by the Sports Development Unit.

Athletics is part of the Disability School Sports Programme that is rolled out to primary and secondary special educational needs units each year, with Manx Sport and Recreation’s community coaches holding sessions at schools.

At the festivals, held at the National Sports Centre last Wednesday, more than 100 children took part in target throwing, long jump, speed bounce, high stepper, running and obstacle races and team relays.

‘The festivals gave children the opportunity to compete and socialise with others in a fun and friendly environment,’ said Zoe Carney, Disability Sports Development Officer with the Department of Education and Children.

Ongoing support from Barclays Wealth and Investment Management has allowed the Sports Development Unit to purchase specialised sporting equipment that ensures all the programme’s training sessions and festivals are fully inclusive to all children, Zoe said.

‘We would like to thank Barclays for their support over the past three years,’ Zoe added. ‘Their continued help has allowed us to give children with disabilities and special needs much greater access to sport.’

Jamie Joughin, Assistant Vice President at Barclays Wealth and Investment Management, said: ‘Barclays is passionate about supporting local community initiatives and it’s great that our work with the Disability School Sports Programme has enabled the Sports Development Unit to purchase a range of specialist equipment, t-shirts and medals, allowing all the children taking part in the festivals to try a wide range of sports.’
