Academic weighs arguments over Bishop's role in Tynwald

An academic who has studied the role of the Bishop in the Manx parliament has stepped into the debate over whether the post should remain.
On Tynwald Day last week, a member of the public presented a petition for redress, calling for the Lord Bishop to be removed from Legislative Council.
The bishop has a vote in Tynwald but is not elected.
Other Council members have no public mandate either, but are voted in by the Keys.
Professor Peter Edge of Oxford Brookes University published a lengthy study into the Bishop of Sodor and Man's role in Tynwald in 2001.
The study reached no conclusion as to whether it was a good or bad thing, but weighed the arguments.
