The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral choir is to perform at three places of worship in the Island this month.
The choir will be performing in the Island after returning from Rome where they sang at the papal mass for St Peter and St Paul in addition to singing at other basilicas and churches in the city.
On Friday July 25th the choir will give a 1pm lunchtime concert at St Mary’s on the Harbour, Castletown, sung by the boy choristers under the direction of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral’s musical director Dr Christopher McElroy and accompanied by organ scholar Charlotte Rowan. The programme will include Frank’s Panis Angelicus, Bach’s, Jesu Joy of Man’s Desiring and several pieces by Benjamin Britten.
On Saturday July 26th Peel Cathedral will be the setting for a concert starting at 7pm sung by the boy choristers and lay clerks, directed by Dr McElroy and accompanied on the organ by Richard Lea. The programme will include works by Bach, Frank, Grieg, Handel and Tallis.
On Sunday July 27th at 11am at St Mary of the Isle, Douglas the choir will sing William Byrd’s Mass for four voices alongside motets by Vaughan Williams and Tallis.
Dr McElroy said: ‘We are delighted to be visiting the Isle of Man this summer, particularly during the Year of Culture. As the Catholic parishes on the Island fall under the Archdiocese of Liverpool it is a particular pleasure to be able to visit, as the Cathedral choir does with other parishes in the archdiocese. We are very much looking forward to experiencing the beauty and culture of the island, meeting the local community and sharing our music.’
Tickets are free and there will be a retiring collection at each church.
