Douglas Fire Station will be opening its doors to the public on Sunday 20 July 2014 and putting on a number of demonstrations, rides and refreshments to help raise money for two deserving charities.
The Firefighters Charity provides beneficial assistance to serving and retained firefighters through recuperation and rehabilitation. The charity also provides support for their families.
Rebecca House is the children’s wing of Isle of Man Hospice that provides a safe haven and end of life care for children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions.
From 11am to 4pm, everyone is welcome to watch demonstrations of how firefighters deal with road traffic collisions, provide rescues from buildings on fire and how to tackle a chip pan fire. The Line Rescue team will construct a zip wire and back by popular demand people will be able to ride in a fire engine.
During the day people will have the opportunity to wear fire kit (bring your camera!) and can take part in the ‘Hose Run Challenge’, where the best time of the day receives a great prize. Plus anyone with a head for heights will be able to enjoy going up in the sky to over 30 meters on our Aerial Ladder Platforms.
Chief Fire Officer Kevin Groom said: ‘I am delighted that Douglas Fire Station is once again holding this marvellous event. It will without doubt be a great opportunity to demonstrate the wide range of skills of a firefighter and also show the range of equipment and fire appliances that daily protect the Island’s community.’
Other activities will include a bouncy castle, a roundabout, a bounce and play trailer, face painting, a gladiator duel and more.
Refreshments, cakes, ice cream and a hog roast will be available throughout the day and there will be a raffle to win some great prizes, such as a return journey for a car and two people on the ferry, dinner vouchers, phone vouchers and more.
There is a bus stop in front of the station if you are travelling by public transport, if you are driving limited parking is available in the car park behind the Quarterbridge public house.
This fun day out will be open from 11am to 4pm and we look forward to seeing everyone.
