Crossroads’ holiday respite scheme extends provision despite losing funding

by isleofman.com 15th July 2014

A local charity running a Holiday Scheme on island for over 10 years has managed to navigate registration requirements to allow them to try and plug a gap in school holiday respite for parents of children under the age of 8 years who have additional needs.

Children who are based in a Special Needs Unit within school are eligible to attend the Holiday Scheme throughout the Easter and summer holidays. Previously the scheme has been limited to accommodating children aged 8 years and above. However, with the help of the Registrations and Inspections unit Crossroads have managed to extend that provision to children from 5 years of age and has offered places to carers in need of summer respite.

Despite the scheme losing crucial funding this year it has managed to continue providing respite to 46 families over the summer and open its doors to under 8s. Jackie Betteridge CEO of Crossroads said, “The heroes of this story have been Education who have continued to support the scheme through the years and who have allowed Crossroads to use the College’s new Annie Gill Building, a fully equipped premises to cater for additional needs. Unfortunately a trust that has supported the scheme for many years was depleted but we were determined to continue the scheme as I know how much it means to parents”.

The Holiday Scheme allows parents of children with disabilities or illness to have some time to themselves over the summer holiday, spend time with siblings or continue to work, respite for parent carers is essential to maintain their own health and wellbeing.  Crossroads believe children with additional needs should have the same opportunities and experiences as children who can attend mainstream holiday schemes.  This year’s activities include trips with Sailing for the Disabled, activities at the Venture Centre, trips to the beach and Wildlife Park, and rides on the steam train.
