Isle of Man Arts Council sponsors Film School

by isleofman.com 17th July 2014
The Department of Education and Children’s summer Film School is free for participants thanks to generous sponsorship from the Isle of Man Arts Council.

The film school, organised by Manx Arts Development, is now in its eighth year and has become an established training ground for aspiring film-makers, delivering a comprehensive film-making course, age and ability appropriate, for young people.

Emma Callin, Department of Education and Children’s Community Arts Development Manager, said: “The ability to offer the summer Film School completely free this year during Island of Culture 2014 means that we can encourage more students to take part.  We would normally make a modest charge so we are very grateful to the Isle of Man Arts Council for their sponsorship and for helping us to make this opportunity accessible to everyone.  Teaching and guidance will be provided for various film genre and techniques, including animation, and each participant will complete at least one film project, individually or as part of a group.”

Film School will be delivered by professional film-makers from local short film scheme MannIN Shorts, which is an initiative to provide a platform for hopeful film-makers of any age to build their skills, develop their ideas and make films locally.  Film School has helped previous participants grow links with MannIN Shorts and Isle of Man Film and has encouraged entries into the Young Film Maker of Mann competition.  The film school includes all aspects of film making and provides opportunities for students to experience aspects of film-making which are new to them and advanced techniques for those with more experience.

The dates are 11th – 13th August for 8 – 12 year olds and 18th – 20th August for 13 – 16 year olds. Both courses run from 9am to 4pm each at St Ninian’s Lower School.  The closing date for entries for summer Film School is Friday, 1st August.  Entry forms can be obtained from Manx Arts Development on 694598, or email: jan.cowan@gov.im.
