Commemorative medallion donated to the Manx Aviation & Military Museum

by isleofman.com 27th August 2014
Isle of Man Stamps & Coins has donated one of its limited edition specially-struck commemorative medallions to the Manx Aviation and Military Museum at Ronaldsway for its upcoming new permanent exhibition called ‘14-18’ which remembers the role of our Island and its people in the ‘Great War’.

The exhibition will have an intimate and moving atmosphere with the use of personal memories, diaries and photographs to give an impression of how individuals were affected by the war, both at the battlefront and at home. It will display uniforms and weapons in addition to souvenirs that soldiers brought back from the battlefields, along with the soldiers’ own personal memorabilia and good luck charms. It will also tell how the Island’s servicemen felt at being far away from home as well as showing how during the years of war families and the Island community were changed forever by the loss of a significant proportion of their young men.

Manx Aviation and Military Museum Director, Ivor Ramsden said: “We are very grateful to Isle of Man Post Office for donating this fine commemorative medallion which will be put on display along with some of the medals that were awarded to local men for their wartime service. It will make an interesting comparison in styles and is a direct link between our generation and the one which suffered the rigours of the ‘Great War’ a hundred years ago.”
