Learning opportunity for people with a disability

by isleofman.com 19th September 2014

The Community Farm is opening its doors on Wednesday 1st October from 1pm to 3.30pm to anyone interested in finding out about the Inclusion Programme. The scheme, funded by Manx Mencap, is open to people over 18 from the disability community with either a learning or physical disability. There are a number of different programmes within the scheme, and currently places are available for the Learning Programme with weekly sessions from 10am to 4pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Students can achieve vocational qualifications including Open Awards in Horticultural Skills and an Introduction to Conservation. There is a nominal fee per session of ?2 per person and, although the programme has already begun for this academic year, there are still opportunities for more individuals to join.

The Open Session on 1st October welcomes potential Inclusion Programme members, their families, care workers and anyone else interested in finding out more about the Learning Programme or any aspect of Inclusion. Community Farm team members will be available to show visitors around and to answer questions. There will be a range of hands-on activities to give a taste of some of the work that takes place at the Community Farm.

Learners from the first year (2013/2014) will also be on site to show off some of the projects and work that they were involved in during the first year of the project. The Inclusion Programme includes also four other programmes titled Inspire, Enrichment, Supported Volunteering and Development. Inspire provides an opportunity for individuals to work on seasonal projects at the Community Farm. Enrichment encourages participants to progress using practical experiences, and Supported Volunteering is for those ready to focus on pre-employment skills. Development is for members who completed last year’s Learning Programme and extends them further in a learning environment.

To find out more about the Inclusion Programme or the open event, please contact Inclusion Officer Llinos Ellis by phoning 676076 (mobile 355361) or emailing farm@thechildrenscentre.org.im.

If you are interested in attending the open event, but are unable to make it on October 1st, please get in touch using the above contact details and the Farm Team will arrange for an alternative time to visit.
